Virginia's Circuit Court Case Information portal (CJISWeb) allows anyone to search civil cases, including dissolution of marriage filings, in King George and other participating Virginia circuit courts. Search by party name, case number, or hearing date. The portal is free to use.

The portal shows basic case details: the case number, filing date, party names, hearing dates, and status codes such as "Decreed" or "Dismissed." It does not show the full text of filed documents or divorce decrees. For those, contact the King George Circuit Court Clerk directly.

The Online Case Information System statewide search covers multiple court levels at once. This is useful if a King George dissolution matter has related companion cases filed in a different court, such as a protective order in a juvenile and domestic relations court.

The Virginia Courts website explains how to go about requesting public records from clerks of court. King George dissolution records are generally open to public inspection under Titles 16.1 and 17.1 of the Code of Virginia, unless a court order restricts access.

If a King George dissolution case does not appear in CJISWeb, it may predate the court's electronic records system. Contact the clerk's office to request a search of older paper or microfilm archives.

Note: Use the full legal name exactly as it appears on court records when searching. Partial names or variations may not return the correct results.

If you do not know the exact divorce date, VDH will search a five-year window for an added fee. Express processing is available for urgent needs. Mail requests take about two weeks from the date received.

King George County Dissolution of Marriage Laws

All dissolution of marriage proceedings in King George County follow Virginia law. Under Virginia Code Section 20-96, circuit courts have exclusive jurisdiction over divorce and annulment. Every dissolution case for King George County must be filed at the King George Circuit Court.

The grounds for divorce are set out in Code Section 20-91. Fault grounds include adultery, cruelty, desertion, and felony conviction. No-fault divorce requires the parties to live separate and apart without cohabitation for one full year. With a written separation agreement and no minor children, that period drops to six months.

At least one party must meet the residency requirement under Code Section 20-97. That means being a bona fide resident and domiciliary of Virginia for at least six months before filing the suit. King George County is home to a significant military population. Military members stationed in Virginia for six months or more are presumed to meet this residency standard under the statute.

Venue rules under Section 20-99 allow filing where the parties last lived together, where the defendant lives, or where the plaintiff resides if the defendant is a nonresident. Section 20-121.03 requires that identifying information such as Social Security numbers and financial account data be placed in a confidential addendum separate from the public record. Section 20-121.4 allows name restoration as part of the final decree.

What King George County Dissolution Records Contain

The case file held by the King George Circuit Court Clerk includes every document filed during the dissolution of marriage proceeding. This covers the complaint, responsive pleadings, motions, temporary orders, any property settlement agreement, and the final divorce decree. These files are open to the public unless a court order seals specific items.

Virginia Code Section 20-121.03 requires that all identifying information be placed in a separate confidential addendum. This includes Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, dates of birth, and financial account numbers. The King George clerk stores the addendum securely and allows access only to the parties, their attorneys, and authorized agencies.

Copies of a dissolution decree from the King George clerk will not include anything from the confidential addendum. For most common legal uses, such as a name change, passport application, or remarriage, the public copy of the decree is sufficient. If sensitive information was incorrectly placed in the public portion of the file, a motion must be filed with the court to fix the record.

The land records division at the King George Circuit Court holds deeds tied to dissolution proceedings. If a property transfer was part of the divorce settlement, quitclaim deeds or other transfer instruments should appear in the county land records. The Secure Remote Access to Land Records system may allow remote searching if King George participates. Contact the clerk's office for registration details and any applicable fees.
